Daniel Park, a 32-year-old resident of Kent, Washington, was arrested at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York City. Authorities allege he is connected to last month's bombing outside a fertility clinic in Palm Springs, California. Park is accused of providing materials for the bomb used in the attack, which killed the primary suspect, Guy Edward Bartkus, and injured at least four others.
Park is scheduled to appear in a Brooklyn federal courtroom on Wednesday afternoon (June 4) before being transferred to Los Angeles for prosecution. The U.S. Attorney's office in Los Angeles, along with the FBI, is leading the investigation into what has been labeled an act of domestic terrorism.
The bombing occurred on May 17 at the American Reproductive Centers in Palm Springs. Bartkus, the primary suspect, was killed in the explosion. He was found to have "anti-natalist" views, which oppose procreation, and had expressed these beliefs in online writings. The explosion was powerful enough to damage nearby buildings and was described by the FBI as "probably the largest bombing scene that we’ve had in Southern California."
According to the Los Angeles Times, Bartkus had access to a large quantity of commercially available chemical products, and investigators are examining how he acquired them. The FBI is also investigating whether Bartkus had any assistance in planning the attack.
ABC News reports that all embryos at the fertility clinic were saved during the incident. The FBI's Los Angeles field office has called the attack an "intentional act of terrorism."
